SHEEP VET

I graduated in 2014 from the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu and had already started working as a substitute municipal veterinarian alongside my studies. During my first working years, I did diverse mixed practice and a lot of on-call duty in Kainuu and Päijät-Häme. After that, I worked for four years as an official control veterinarian, mainly carrying out suspicion-based animal welfare inspections, serving as an emergency preparedness veterinarian and handling animal disease matters. In 2019, I returned to clinical practice and worked in a busy, small-animal-oriented city veterinarian position until I was offered a doctoral researcher position at the University of Helsinki. At the moment, my clinical practice is small-scale, as studies and farm management take priority, but I finally feel that I am in my dream profession as a sheep veterinarian!

I collaborate with the Production Animal Medicine Department of the University of Helsinki. I work as a doctoral researcher in the SheepWell-research project (University of Helsinki, Luke). In addition, I am part of NORSE, the Nordic and Baltic small ruminant network, which includes sheep and goat veterinarians and researchers.

Sheep Veterinary Services

- non-urgent farm visits,

- surgery (e.g. castrations, caesarean sections, teaser rams, navel surgeries),

- vaccination plans and visits (clostridial disease),

- euthanasia.

Visits are priced on a case-by-case basis.

Home Euthanasia Visits

Support is provided in situations where, for example, transporting a pet to the veterinary clinic is difficult or impossible. A peaceful euthanasia at home is the final act of love that can be given to a beloved pet.

Non-urgent home euthanasia visits for dogs and cats are carried out in the Kärkölä area by appointment; there is no emergency service. In urgent cases, the animal’s owner must always contact the on-call municipal veterinarian.

Visits are priced individually per patient, approximately €150–250.

Healthcare services for sheep farms

- NEUVO-subsidised services for small and large sheep farms,

- Ewe clinic visits (pregnancy ultrasound, udder examination, body condition scoring),

- feeding plans,

- Targeted problem-solving interventions.

In 2025, prices excluding VAT: €75/h + mileage allowance €0.63/km

My working area covers approximately a 200 km radius from Kärkölä in Päijät-Häme. Non-urgent patient visits can be arranged in connection with a health care visit even at more distant locations, while more acute cases can also be handled at facilities located closer by.
